Audi E-Tron GT 2022 Launch

Automakers are continuing the jump from gas engines to pure EVs. Companies like VW, BMW, and Jaguar, have already committed to a range of electric and electrified vehicles in the next few years. Audi, not one to be left out of the green movement, has plans itself to introduce a fully electric sports car by the year 2022, according to a new report.

In an interview with Auto Motor Und Sport, member of the Audi management board, Peter Mertens, suggested that a battery-powered “E-Tron GT” will be on the market in just a few years. It will share its platform with the upcoming Porsche Mission E but will come with a handful of unique styling elements all its own.

“The strength of the group is that we can divide up the work on the individual technologies,” said Mertens. “This does not only apply to drives, but also to individual components. In the PPE (Premium Platform Electric), for example, Porsche is responsible for the rear axle. We define ourselves very much about sportiness, motorsport, but also about vehicles such as an intended – let’s call it – E-Tron GT.”

The so-called E-Tron GT will borrow design cues from newer concept cars like the Q8, as well as the outgoing R8 E-Tron, and other Audi EVs before it. It will be a sleek four-door coupe-like vehicle (potentially an SUV like the E-Tron Sportback pictured here) with exterior elements like a single-frame grille, sleek LED headlights, and aggressive wheel arches, among others.

Riding on the same platform as the Porsche Mission E, the upcoming Audi will be both efficient and powerful. The Porsche is rumored to come with upwards of 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts), all-wheel drive, and an estimated range of 310 miles (500 kilometers). The Audi should see similar performance specs, if not slightly below the more premium Porsche when it hopefully debuts sometime in 2022.
